Inertia can be defined in three ways:
• the apparent resistance to force
• the resistance of an object to a change in its motion (or lack thereof)
• the tendency of an object at rest to stay at rest, and for an object in motion to remain in motion.

These are all really saying the same thing. An object with mass requires force
to change its motion, or to start moving from a stationary position. Once the
force is applied, the object will move at a constant velocity until affected by
another force. Inertia is proportional to the mass of any object - the greater
the mass, the greater its inertia.

Two Examples
The inertia of an object resists a change in its motion. That is why seat belts
are used in cars. When the car turns, your body is still trying to continue in
the original direction. If the car suddenly stops, your body still wants to
continue forward.
Inertia also tries to keep a stationary object stationary. If you have to push a
broken-down car from the road, there is a tendency to resist this movement.
And a heavier car is harder to push than a lighter car, even with the same
tires.
Inertia is the tendency of an object at rest to remain at rest until some force
