What is the formal name for a rock collector?
Amateur geology (known as rockhounding in the United States and Canada) is the recreational study and hobby of collecting rocks and mineral specimens from their natural environment. The first amateur geologists were prospectors looking for valuable minerals and gemstones for commercial purposes. Eventually, however, more and more people have been drawn to amateur geology for recreational purposes, mainly for the beauty that rocks and minerals provide.

Well rock collector is a good term but if you make it your profession to collect and study rocks you are called a petrologist .. A Rockhound.
Hat collector That's a good question. I've heard of dozens of specialized words for the collectors of this, that, and the other thing, but there may be no word for a hat co…llector. There's even a word for people who collect beer mats (coasters) -- that's a tegestologist -- but I don't know the word for hat collector. Of course, a milliner is a hat maker/seller, but that's not what you're looking for, I'm sure. This may be your opportunity to coin a new word! As nobody has claimed this title, I hereby declare that the new name for a collector of hats is a "Nowakologist"
Answer . A rock collector is generally referred to as a rockhound. A person who studies the science behind rocks is called a petrologist.
The common term is rock hound. If the collector collects precious stones, gemologist could fit.
A person who collects maps is called a cartomaniac.
